There are two approaches to performing a search:

  • searching for a specific book/article
  • searching for books/articles by subject

Basic Search

Here you can search by the book's name/author/serial number/Dewey classification number.

"Where in the libraries" - will refer you to the library in which the book can be found.

If you cannot remember the book's exact name you can go to "Advanced Search" and search for the book by keywords.

Searching a database: click on the link and login via the:

Single sign-on system

Identification number: full identity number including the control digit.

Password:

Students: set password in moodle.

Lecturers:  same password as for university email login.

Search the database according to the book's title and/or author to find whether it is available for download.

Only a limited number of pages may be downloaded in a given session due to copy rights.

 

Searching for a thesis/dissertation:

You can search for a thesis/dissertation by name/title just like any other book.  In Hebrew, you can also search by the advisor's name.

The Central Library has begun computerizing dissertations to make them available as digital files. 

In order to get the full text of a dissertation:

Find a dissertation's author / title in the computerized catalog

Library card: full identity number twice

Bar-Ilan's subscriptions to Electronic Journals (TDNet)- On/Off Campus access

TDNET homepage:

In the “Library eResources” form, type the name of the journal in which the article you wish to locate appears. If Bar-Ilan University is subscribed to this journal, you can locate the article by its specific details (year, volume, issue, pages).

The article may appear in a journal to which Bar-Ilan University is subscribed only for the printed version. In such cases, you can locate the journal's name in the Libraries Computerized Catalog and find its physical location on campus. You will be able to xerox the required article.

You can also create a User Profile and receive email updates when new articles on a particular subject are published.       

If the book/article is unavailable at Bar-Ilan University:

You can search for it in other libraries in the country.

A book which is not found in any Bar-Ilan University library:

Here you can search by the book's title/author.

If the search shows that the book / article is available at another university/college, you can place an order for an "Interlibrary Loan."

Interlibrary Loan procedures:

Interlibrary Loan is performed in one of two ways:

For general Bar-Ilan University users:

Fill in the Interlibrary Loan Form.

The book/article will arrive in the Interlibrary Loan Section of the Central Library within 10-21 days. The user will receive an email notice. There is a per-book fee for using the service.

The Interlibrary Loan Form can be found on the Computerized Catalog bar.

Alternatively, you can fill in the form and pay the fee from the Interlibrary Loan Room in the Central Library.

For staff / students studying for advanced degrees:

Staff members and students studying for advanced degrees can get books/articles directly from other universities, subject to the relevant library's policies, after filling out the Interlibrary loan form.

This service is free of charge and requested books may be obtained immediately.

Furthermore, books/articles that are not to be found in the country may be ordered from leading universities abroad using the Interlibrary Loan service as well. The service is based on a fee.

"Where in the libraries/circulation" - will refer you to the library in which the books can be found.

Using the Advanced Search form, you can cross-reference several keywords and search for all the books in a specific subject.

 

Searching for electronic books by subject:

See above: Searching for an ebook (electronic book).

Instead of the name of the book/author choose a subject.

 

Searching Bar Ilan University libraries for dissertations and theses on a specific subject:

In the BARCAT – Bar Ilan Library Catalog choose the Advanced Search form.

In the subject field, enter your subject.

In the material type field enter: M.A thesis, Ph.D thesis.

Cross-search these two fields.

After choosing the relevant database, login via the:

The databases are very user-friendly and can be searched by subject. The search is usually performed by cross-referencing two search terms.  Some databases enable searching using a thesaurus.

The database Web of Science  enables searching citations, such as who quoted who in a certain field, in addition to searching according to subject.
