  B.A. program

The average child subconsciously picks up languages, his capabilities being triggered by his surroundings. Nevertheless, distinct similarities exist between children even in the most diverse environments. Some aspects of a child's behavior seem to reach beyond any specific society. A child in Israel and a child in Taiwan both smile when they are happy and shake their heads when they don't want something; somewhat more surprisingly, there are striking parallels in their linguistic development as well. A central goal of modern Linguistics is to show that, despite the obvious differences between languages, there are also underlying characteristics that are common to all human languages; hence, young children in all societies make use of similar abstract grammatical principles.

Scientific developments in linguistics over the past 50 years have led to radical changes both in theoretical linguistics and in related interdisciplinary fields, such as neurolinguistics and computational modeling in the natural sciences, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics in the social sciences, and the philosophy of language and philosophy of mind in humanities. Bar-Ilan prides itself on having the best broad based Linguistics program in Israel. The Bar-Ilan Linguistics Division offers courses in syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and literacy, with particular strengths in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics.

Another reason for the outstanding Linguistics program at Bar-Ilan is the researches that are currently underway in the department. Some of the areas being studied by faculty and graduate students include formal semantics of predication and events and their contribution to syntactic and semantic theory; various predication and events and their contribution to syntactic and semantic theory; various issues in first and second language acquisition; and language disorders, including projects on Specific Language Impairment (SLI), ADHD, schizophrenia, and autism. Students are encouraged to propose research projects related to any language that they have access to, as well as research that applies theoretical linguistic knowledge in interdisciplinary or applied areas.

   Direct M.A. program

The Department also offers a direct M.A. program for highly qualified undergraduate students. Students who enter this program can complete an M.A. without a thesis within four years of beginning their undergraduate studies or an M.A. with a thesis within five years
