Linguistics colloquium: Benny Hary
Benny Hary, New York University and Tel Aviv University
Title: Religiolingsuitics: The Connection between Language and Religion
Abstract:
Religion and language are interrelated to such a degree that it is conducive to investigate them together.
This lecture will show the connection between language and religion, addressing language varieties (religiolects) used by religious communities within a sociolinguistic framework. We will investigate the notion of Jewish language varieties, or the Jewish Linguistic Spectrum and we will then look into Crossing Religious Boundaries as well.
After showing some common linguistic and cultural characteristics to many Jewish language varieties, we will expand the notion to Christian and Muslim language varieties and give examples, from Jewish English, Judeo-Arabic, and Christianese.
