Title: Prediction, commitment and reanalysis costs in the lexical and syntactic domains
Abstract: The role of prediction in language processing has received much attention in recent research. However, many questions with regard to the finer details of prediction mechanisms remain unanswered. In this talk, I will present behavioral and electrophysiological findings from several experiments investigating lexical as well as syntactic prediction processes. The results show that the degree of commitment to a prediction may vary depending on the structure involved, as well as on the comprehender. In addition, the results provide novel evidence for specific costs of failed prediction. The wider implications of these results for models of sentence processing will also be discussed.
