MA

Students applying for admission to M.A. programs in Linguistics or in English Literature are expected to have completed an undergraduate program in the relevant field or a related one in which they earned an average grade of at least 80%. For those transferring from a graduate program in another university within Israel, the Department requires an average of 70 (though transfer of course credits is subject to departmental approval).

The nature of the undergraduate degree (discipline, institution, date of graduation) will determine the number and kind of prerequisite courses which must be completed prior to admission.

Minimum requirements do not ensure acceptance into any program. Each application is reviewed individually and acceptance is based on all aspects of the application and the requirements of the department. It is a good idea to consult with a departmental advisor prior to application.

Applications are subject to an initial screening by the Department's Admissions Committee, whose decisions are based on the applicant's academic qualifications and letters of recommendation. The final decision on these matters is made by the University M.A. Committee on the basis of recommendations from the Department of English Literature and Linguistics.

Each applicant is required to apply separately to the University M.A. Committee, which  has its own procedures and forms, and to the Department of English Literature and Linguistics. The procedure is as follows:

1. Every applicant must send the following documents directly to the Department:

  •      An up-to-date CV
  •      An academic writing sample (thesis, seminar paper)
  •      Transcripts from previous academic studies
  •      Two letters of recommendation from people who are qualified to evaluate  the applicant's academic performance (preferably mailed directly to the departmental office)

These materials should be sent via email attachment or regular post:
Department of English Literature and Linguistics
          Bar-Ilan University
          Ramat Gan 52900
          Israel
          english.dept (at) mail.biu.ac.il

After review of these materials, successful candidates may be invited for an interview with a member of the Department's Admissions Committee.
